About US

I picked up a golf club for the first time when I was fourteen. Found an old 7-iron in my uncle’s garage, walked to the field behind his house, and started swinging at nothing.

Terrible form. No clue what I was doing.

But something clicked.

That sound when the clubface meets the ball just right. I chased that feeling for years. Through broken tees, lost balls, and rounds so bad I almost quit twice.

Almost.

My name is Walter Hampton. I’m the founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Golf Hype. This whole thing started because I couldn’t shut up about golf.

I spent over a decade playing, studying, and obsessing over every part of this game. The gear. The technique. The mental side nobody talks about enough. I tested clubs I couldn’t afford and returned them before the 30-day window closed. I became the guy friends called before they bought a driver. The guy coworkers asked when they wanted to break 90.

Somewhere along the way, I realized I should probably write this stuff down.

Why The Golf Hype

Most golf content online falls into two categories. Either it’s written by someone who clearly never shanked a ball into a parking lot, or it’s so technical you need an engineering degree to follow along.

I wanted something different. Something that felt like two golfers talking at the clubhouse after eighteen holes. Honest. Practical. Useful.

That’s The Golf Hype.

Swing tips that actually make sense. Gear reviews from people who test equipment on real courses. Course strategy for players who shoot 75 and players who shoot 105. Short game secrets. Mental game breakdowns. The stuff that separates golfers who plateau from golfers who keep getting better.

Every article on this site exists because someone on our team asked one question: would this actually help a golfer?

If the answer was no, we scrapped it.

The Team

Walter Hampton — Founder & Editor-in-Chief

15+ years on the course. Thousands of hours testing equipment. A handicap that fluctuates between “pretty solid” and “I don’t want to talk about it.” Walter oversees every piece of content on The Golf Hype. Editorial direction, gear reviews, and the occasional rant about slow play. When he’s not editing, he’s on the practice green working on a putting stroke his wife says he talks about in his sleep.

David Calloway — Senior Staff Writer

College athlete in a completely different sport. Picked up golf in his late twenties and became dangerously competitive within six months. He covers swing mechanics, training drills, and course strategy. He’s broken 80 exactly three times and remembers every shot from each round. Degree in Sports Science. His rule: understand why something works before you tell someone to try it.

Rachel Simmons — Staff Writer & Gear Analyst

Her grandfather was a club pro in North Carolina. She played through college, worked golf retail for four years, and developed an equipment obsession that borders on unhealthy. She can tell you the difference between two shaft flexes by feel alone. Rachel handles gear reviews, equipment comparisons, and buying guides. If she recommends a club, she’s hit hundreds of balls with it first. No spec-sheet reviews. Ever.

Marcus Chen — Contributing Writer

Weekend golfer who got serious five years ago and never looked back. He writes for The Golf Hype because he remembers what it’s like to be a beginner. To feel overwhelmed by all the advice out there. His focus: rules breakdowns, etiquette guides, and “what I wish someone told me” pieces. Background in journalism. A talent for making complicated things simple.
